Cleaning day. Yes, it may not be the happiest day at home, but it is a necessity. While cleaning your house from top to bottom can be a lot of work, regular cleaning needs to take place to prevent pathogens from infecting your household, especially with Covid-19 still present.

Not sure where to begin? Check out our cleaning checklist of the top 10 areas in your home that require a refreshing scrub now!

Cleaning your refrigerator is one of the most important things you can do to keep your food safe. Make sure to clean all of the shelves, drawers, and compartments with hot water and soap. Disinfect any spills or stains with a non-toxic detergent or spray.

Stovetops should be cleaned often as they can create a sticky residue that’s difficult to remove later on. Ideally, you should use a degreasing agent such as oven cleaner or degreaser regularly to prevent oils from hardening on your stovetop.

When used often, the inside of a microwave is likely to be covered with food stains and scraps from heating up your meals. To clean, you want to start by removing any larger food particles from inside of the microwave with a clean cloth.

Follow up by placing a bowl of water and detergent in the microwave to run for about 1 minute so that it steams up. Remove the bowl and wipe down the microwave with a clean cloth.

To clean an oven, start by removing any racks and soak them in hot, soapy water. Clean the oven door by spraying with a non-toxic oven cleaner or an all-purpose cleaner. Let it sit for about 15 minutes before scrubbing off with a sponge.

For the inside of the oven, mix together baking soda and water to form a paste. Apply the paste to any dirty areas and let it sit for about 30 minutes, then scrub off with a sponge.

Cleaning the toilet bowl can be a challenge, as it is one of the most likely places to breed bacteria (for obvious reasons). Start by cleaning around the rim of your toilet with a brush and scrub it clean with a mix of bleach water, then wipe down all surfaces including under the lid to prevent germs from spreading.

To get rid of any stains in the mouth of the toilet, pour in a small amount of bleach and washing powder and leave overnight.

Cleaning your ceiling fan is an easy way to improve the air quality in your home. Start by removing any dust or dirt from the blades with a damp cloth. Next, mix together a small amount of dish soap with water and use a spray bottle to apply it on the fan. Let it sit for about 15 minutes before wiping off with a clean cloth.

The kitchen hood is often one of the dirtiest places in the house as it collects all the grease and smoke from your cooking. Start by removing any filters and soaking them in hot, soapy water. Clean the hood with a sponge and non-toxic oven cleaner or an all-purpose cleaning solution. Let it sit for about 15 minutes before wiping off with a damp cloth.

Lastly, spray on a mixture of water and dish soap to help wash away any leftover grease from the hood.

A mattress can often be a breeding ground for bacteria and dust mites, so it’s important to clean it at least once a year. Start by removing the sheets and covers from the mattress to be washed.

Next, use a vacuum cleaner with the upholstery attachment to remove any dirt or dust from the top and sides of the mattress. If there are any stains, you can treat them with a laundry stain remover or hydrogen peroxide. Allow the mattress to air dry before putting the sheets back on.

A clean washing machine ensures that it continues to function properly. To clean the inside, add a cup of vinegar to the washer and run on a hot cycle. This will help to remove any built-up soap residue or dirt.

To clean the outside, use a mild detergent or an all-purpose cleaner and a scrub brush to remove any dirt or stains. Rinse with water and air dry.

Cleaning your air conditioner is not only important to keep it functioning, but it’s also important for your health as it traps and filters air-borne particles such as dust and bacteria. To start cleaning, remove the air filters in the AC indoor unit and wash off the built-up dust with mild soap. While waiting for the filters to dry, use the time to wipe off the dust from the surface of the unit with a wet cloth.

While this seems like a lot of work, a thorough cleaning and disinfection is needed at least twice a year to ensure your home is free from any infectious germs and viruses.
